With the rapid development of the new energy vehicle industry, every stage of lithium-ion battery production is critical, as these batteries serve as the core power source. Among these components, there is one that may seem unremarkable but actually has far-reaching implications—the winding core (also known as the ABS core or spoke core)—which could potentially become a hidden bottleneck in the lithium-ion battery production process.
As battery technology continues to advance, battery separators are becoming thinner and production speeds are increasing, placing nearly exacting demands on ABS core tubes—which serve as carrier cores—and driving demand to grow exponentially. If ABS core tubes exhibit issues such as poor concentricity, surface defects, or insufficient strength, they are highly likely to trigger a series of serious consequences. These include separator wrinkling, edge collapse, and even foreign object contamination, which significantly increase the risk of battery short circuits and threaten battery safety and performance.
To standardize industry development and ensure battery quality, the industry standard T/CPPIA 56 - 2025, “Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) Spoke Cores for New Energy Vehicle Power Battery Separator Rolls,” was officially released and took effect in November 2025. This standard establishes comprehensive and detailed specifications for ABS core tubes: regarding dimensions and geometric tolerances, it strictly ensures high-precision compatibility with high-speed winding production lines; in terms of mechanical properties, it clearly defines key indicators such as bending strength, hardness, and structural stiffness; regarding surface quality and cleanliness, it sets extremely strict limits on defects, dust, and volatile substances on the surface in contact with the separator; Additionally, taking practical production needs into account, the standard includes requirements for anti-static properties to minimize dust adhesion during film winding.
The introduction of this standard is of great significance. For ABS core manufacturers, it provides clear and explicit product specifications and quality benchmarks, ensuring production follows established guidelines; for separator manufacturers, it offers a reliable basis for procurement and technical acceptance guidelines, helping to control raw material quality. In the long term, this standard will significantly promote product consistency, reduce defects in the production process, and lay a solid foundation for manufacturing safer, higher-performance electric vehicle batteries.
